about

Business: Raleigh Durham Branch, is as such, Business playing with friends in Durham for a week. This is the biggest lineup we’ve had yet featuring Co-founders Jon and Spencer along with newcomers Pete and Dylan, friends of the band and now band members. Also joining Business from far away with his talents on electric guitar and electric violin is Hunter; he overdubbed several tracks in post and we are happy to welcome to the Business family. Missing from this session are Manoj, founding member, and Ross. The two were busy with work and in India respectively. Together, we lay down more funky jams than you can probably handle. Featuring all original music, jams, and good times, The Raleigh Durham Branch is our most eargasmic experience to date. (2017 update: We have since released two covers as bonus tracks at the end of the album, so it's not all original, but the original release was all original).

Personnel:

Spencer—Bass, acoustic guitar, songwriter

Spencer wrote the music for all of our original songs this session, including “Holy Nasty,” “Indescribable Groove,” “Smoothie Prince,” and, “Bumpin Sumpin.” Spencer also wrote the lyrics for “Holy Nasty,” and “Indescribable Groove.” Spencer’s funky chops on bass are the reason that we play together at all. He claims Mike is better, but considering Mike is a dirty no-show, it doesn’t really matter.

Petey Pete—Electric guitar, various percussion

Pete has been the frontman for several ska bands, but took to our funky jam band like a cheese to a hamburger. Super cerebral musician; he was always bringing his knowledge and expertise to help shape the style and tone of the band. Although he’ll never say it, the kid’s got some talent and we couldn’t have made this album happen without him. Pete plays guitar on every track except for “Funky Vegetable Stew,” where he plays percussion and “Arguably a Mallard,” and “Bumpin Sumpin Alt Take.”

Dylan—Electric guitar, drums

Joining us from the band Mobius is guitarist Dylan. This dude is crazy, and also left-handed. While he was unavailable—we forget to ask him to come play with us—for the first couple days, he did show up for a couple hours on the last day we were recording and caught us when we were good and warmed up. Dylan brings his crazy guitar, and even drum, shenanigans to the tracks, “Chunky Vegetable Soup,” and “Arguably a Mallard,” on guitar, and “Funky Vegetable Stew,” and “Bumpin Sumpin Alt Take” on drums.

Hunter—Electric guitar, electric violin

Hunter is a music comp major at Northwestern; he doesn’t have much of a stake in this Durham nonsense. However, he was a member of the Jones Jam Band with Jon, as well as briefly one of Jon’s bandmates in several bands that never made it off the ground including but not limited to, Endgame, Queen Spawn, Cryptic Coloration, Assplay, Ass, Spider Ass, and Mookie and the New Bugattis. Hunter was kind enough to fill in guitar and even violin on tracks that needed a little extra ‘umph’. Hunter plays guitar and violin on “Arguably a Mallard,” and guitar on “Funky Vegetable Stew,” and “Bumpin Sumpin Alt Take.”

Jon—Drums, additional percussion, vocals, songwriter, arranger, sound engineer

Jon is the mastermind behind this whole crazy production. He’s also the one writing all of this so he gets to say whatever he wants. While he will never call himself good enough at any of the very many things he does, he will say that he does it. The term “sound engineer” is also used very loosely as Jon has no formal training outside of mixing and mastering Business’s other work. In the goal to make every album sound better than the last, Jon has worked tirelessly in post to try to bring out the cool, natural, sound that Business has live, but he still thinks that, “It sounds like garbage. Next time we’re getting a #@$%* studio and a sound engineer, I’m tired of this *&^%@.” Despite his gripes about mixing and mastering, there are a lot of hurdles to do when you only have a week to record everything you want before you pack up and go. Jon acknowledges the fact that nothing is perfect, and, “That’s ultimately our sound anyways; we’ve never been perfect or super clean, who cares?” Jon cares, but that’s beside the point. Jon helped arrange Spencer’s four songs and wrote the lyrics to “Smoothie Prince.” Jon’s vocals are on “Holy Nasty,” “Indescribable Groove,” and “Smoothie Prince.” Jon does not play drums on the tracks that Dylan plays drums.
